Summer weather is approaching, and although a little sunshine is something we can all be optimistic about, the harsh storms that occur during Indiana’s summers can adversely affect various structures. Roofs are exterior structures that are particularly vulnerable to destruction caused by storms. If your roof is damaged from a major hail storm or rain storm, it might be a good idea to start thinking about home remodeling.

Concerning roof leaks, an easy way to decipher whether or not your roof has one is by looking for any water stains across your ceilings and down your walls. The hard part is trying to pinpoint the source of the leak. If you’re thinking that a roof leak is just a minor issue, you should be aware that if you do not fix it immediately, big problems can arise. Mold, rotted framing, and damaged insulation and ceilings can all result from a small leak.

Leaks commonly produced by broken plumbing vent boots can be fixed by purchasing a new boot. Another roof leak that frequently occurs is caused by a “shiner,” which is a nail that missed the framing member. To solve the problem, simply look on the underside of the roof for the nail, and then use pliers to clip it. A complex leak signifies a more extensive problem with your roofing. In this case, it’s probably best to hire a general contractor to help you in the process of home remodeling.

Thunderstorms can also cause hail that varies from the size of a pea to the size of a golf ball. Pea-sized hail about one quarter inch in diameter is not something to worry about because it does little to no damage. Hail that is about three-quarters inch in diameter can cause threshold damage to a roof; however, the damage is merely cosmetic and doesn’t affect the durability of the shingles. Hail that resembles the size of a golf ball can cause wood splitting, granule loss, and shingle fractures, severely damaging your home’s roofing.
