5 Tips for Hiring a General Contractor

For months, you’ve been pinning home-design ideas, cutting out pictures from Better Homes and Gardens, and making your home “wish list.” Now, you’re finally ready to embark on your home-remodeling project! But first, you need to find the right general contractor for the job. Before you move forward, consider these five hiring tips from Centennial Construction & Remodeling Services, Inc.

1. Gather recommendations from trusted sources.

Do you have a friend or family member whose home you just adore? Ask them which company did their home improvements, and begin to make a list of several general contractors you want to consider. If you’re new to an area, you may want to check out a company’s customer reviews or utilize service review websites.

2. Do your research.

From your list of recommendations, begin to look through the contractor’s website and photo gallery of past work. You may also want to call the company to get a feel for its customer service and professionalism.

3. Consider contractor specializations.

Take note if the home remodeler specializes in a certain type of home improvement, such as kitchen remodeling, basement finishing, or bathroom remodeling. Some contractors are known regionally for being the “best (fill in the blank) remodeler in Indianapolis.” If you are remodeling your kitchen, you may want to go with someone known for superior workmanship in that area.

4. Choose three general contractors to interview.

After doing your preliminary research, narrow down your options. We recommend interviewing three (but no more than five) general contractors. Be sure to compile a list of questions before you meet, and take time to ask each one. Make sure the contractor also provides you with a written quote.

5. Pay attention to your instincts.

You want to feel comfortable with the contracting team who will be working in your home. At the end of the day, make sure you are confident in that contractor and his or her reputation before signing on the dotted line.
