4 Tips to Save Energy in Your Home This Winter

In central Indiana, winter is closing in on us and it’s a good time to prepare your home for the rough weather to come. In addition to packing up garden hoses and storing your favorite wind chimes, think about your windows. Windows are one of the most energy-vulnerable parts of your home. By taking a few proactive steps, you can save money on gas and electric bills, and keep your Indianapolis home warm and toasty. At Centennial Construction & Remodeling Services, Inc., we’ll help you optimize your home’s energy efficiency with window care.

1. Put time on your side

Before you leave for the day, open window treatments on your home’s south-facing windows. This will welcome in natural heat from the sun. When you get home, close the window treatments to serve as an energy-saving barrier. Heavy, noise-cancelling drapes are most effective.

2. Cover problematic windows and patio doors

Apply heavy-duty, adhesive, clear plastic sheets to any less-than-perfect windows and patio doors to seal in the heat. There are a variety of window treatments manufactured to apply to drafty windows during the winter months. Visit your local hardware store to find the right product for your window size.

3. Program for success

With a wealth of smart home products on the market, put a programmable thermostat to work. This way, you can regulate heat according to your sleep and activity schedules. Work from home? Put on some layers during the day to tolerate a lower home temperature. Decrease the temperature at night, and cozy up with blankets at bedtime. Decreasing the thermostat at night can save a significant amount on your heating bill.

4. Contact us for an evaluation

Ask the exterior experts at Centennial Construction to evaluate your home’s windows to find and seal leaks. We can save you even more money with an evaluation to find and professionally seal all of your window leaks. When you’re ready, we’ll upgrade your windows to the latest energy-efficient models. Contact us today at (317) 848-7634 to schedule a visit. And get ready to enjoy a cozy, comfortable winter indoors.
