1. Go big on the shower.
This is where you’ll be spending a lot of time in your new bathroom. Make it a place that’s refreshing and rejuvenating. If you’re doing a complete remodel, consider splurging with a large, luxuriously tiled shower space with multiple shower heads. But if this is the only bathroom in the house, stick with a shower/tub combo. It’ll give your home better resale value.
2. Include plenty of vanity space.
You need space to set things down on your vanity, as that’s where you do most of your grooming and getting ready for the day. Although dual sinks are popular, if space is a premium with your remodel, consider going with one sink to maximize vanity space. With only one set of plumbing, this will also provide more space in the under-sink cabinet space.
3. Plan your ventilation needs.
Bathrooms are high-moisture rooms, so ventilation is key to ensure that the moisture doesn’t cause damage to the structure of your bathroom. The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends a ducted fan system that cycles least 50 cubic feet per minute, though you may need a stronger unit if the space is larger than 100 square feet or if you plan to install a steam shower. Humidity-sensing units will automatically turn on and off depending on the amount of moisture in the air.
