3 Signs Your Roof Is Suffering from Dry Rot

At Centennial Construction & Remodeling Services, Inc., most of the roof damage we repair is hail and storm damage and missing or damaged shingles. However, one repair that we don’t see often – but that can cause significant damage – is dry rot. Dry rot is caused by a fungus that doesn’t require a lot of moisture to grow, hence its name. The only way to know if you have dry rot is to inspect your attic. So, when you do, here are the most common signs to look for.

1. Orange Dust

The most common species of fungi that creates dry rot is Serpula lacrymans. When these tiny spores eat away at the wood and then attempt to multiply, they leave behind a brownish, orange dust. This dust is similar to that left behind by termites, but instead of being confined to one spot like a termite nest, it will cover all of your attic rafts.

2. White Growth

Some species of dry rot fungi can be identified by a whitish growth that spreads across the surface of the wood. This white growth is best seen with a flashlight and looks like ash on the wood of your rafters. These tiny spores tend to spread out like a web and can jump from rafter to rafter, so it’s best to wear gloves and never touch the fungus with your bare hands.

3. The Wood Looks Old

Dry rot can also make fairly young rafters and wood beams look old and cause them to crumble. The spores burrow deep into the surfaces, causing cracks and fragmenting the wood. If you gently tap the wood with a screwdriver handle and it crumbles or falls off, then dry rot has taken over the frame of your roof.
