Put Your Tax Refund to Work on Your House

It’s that time of the year again: tax season will soon be upon us. It’s time to gather important documents and secure appointments with accountants. Still, all of the hustle and bustle is worth it when you receive the highly coveted tax refund. It’s exciting to have extra cash in your pocket during springtime, but what do you do with it? At Centennial Construction & Remodeling Services, Inc., we think that home construction and remodeling projects is the answer. Spend your tax refund wisely, and invest it in your property.

Make a Refund Plan

First, don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched. Even if you have a rough idea of what your refund might be, don’t make too many concrete plans until your taxes are filed. Once you know the end result, take some time to consider what you’ll do with the extra cash.

1. Save Your Money

If you don’t have an emergency fund in your savings account, it’s wise to save this money. Generally, it’s encouraged to have at least 3 months’ operating expenses in your savings account for emergency purposes. Depending on your lifestyle and family, you may wish to reserve upwards of six to eight months’ worth of emergency funds.

2. Pay Off Existing Debt

Paying off high-interest debt is always a a good thing to do with extra funds. Conquer the credit card debt, car loans, and student loans to avoid incurring additional debt due to interest accumulation. Consult your personal finance and accounting advisors for specific recommendations on paying off debt.

3. Invest in Improving Your Home

If you feel pretty confident about your savings and debt situations, think about investing money in your home to increase its property value. You’ll find the most bang for your buck with kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects. Curb appeal projects can also work wonders in drawing in potential buyers.
