Classic Marble Flooring for Your Bathroom

If you’d like to update part of your bathroom, consider adding marble floors to achieve the ultimate wow factor. Marble is an elegant, timeless look that, while pricey, could last for a lifetime. Marble in particular has been used in Europe since antiquity. Nowadays, marble makes for a stunning bathroom remodel.

During the last several years in the United States, the sale of hard stone products such as marble has skyrocketed for home remodeling purposes. You may be wondering, however, how it will hold up as a flooring material for a bathroom remodeling project. Let’s consider some of the specifics of a marble floor.

Basic Marble Information

Marble is a natural stone that was historically found in the Mediterranean, hence its prominence in Ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. Today, however, besides the Mediterranean, different varieties and colors of marble are found and quarried all over Europe, Australia, India, the United States, and other countries around the world.

You can find marble produced in tile form, and your general contractor can install similarly to ceramic tile. You have a choice of colors, which are based on where the marble quarry is located. Some of the common colors are varying shades of white, grey, and green. You’ll find some marble has prominent veining while others are almost one pure color.

Marble Care and Cost

Marble is a durable stone, and will last a long time, but it does require quite a bit of care and maintenance. Marble is more porous than granite and needs to be sealed to prevent staining from common household liquids and cleaners, such as nail polish remover, shampoo, and even water. A marble bathroom floor should be resealed every 9 to 12 months.

When cleaning sealed marble floors, do not use chemicals. Simply mop the floor with water, and then dry it with a towel. Be sure to check your manufacturer’s guidelines for specific directions.

Marble is also a pricey investment. Marble tiles start at $2 to $4 per square foot, and the price quickly rises depending on any customization. But if you have a smaller bathroom, you can splurge on marble flooring since there will be less square footage to cover, allowing you to get the biggest bang for your buck.

Overall, marble creates a floor of unmatched beauty. Just be sure to care for your marble floors properly, and they’ll provide a timeless look that lasts.
