Winterization

3 Ways to Prevent Winter Water Damage

Central Indiana winters are messy and brutal! The accumulation of ice and snow not only makes your commute to work challenging but also can damage your home. While some winter damage is abrupt and obvious, other forms aren’t noticeable until the snow has melted, resulting in a complete home restoration. Still, you can do things to prevent this type of home damage, and it starts by following these three tips from Centennial Construction & Remodeling Services, Inc.

1. Protect Your Plumbing

Frozen and busted pipes are a common issue in the winter. The freezing temperatures can affect pipes located in attics, crawl spaces, and exterior walls. This type of water damage is usually pretty serious, often resulting in an entire remodel. So, if you want to protect your home this winter, insulate all cracks and holes along your foundation, let cold water drip from faucets, and leave and set the furnace to the same temperature throughout the day as you do at night.

2. Prevent Ice Dams

Ice dams occur when warm air from the attic melts the snow on the roof. This melted snow then collects on eaves and freezes, creating ice dams. If you don’t prevent or clear them, these dams can damage the roof. So, make sure your gutters and downspouts are cleared before winter, insulate your attic properly, and provide adequate ventilation in the attic as well.

3. Reduce Condensation

During the winter, condensation builds up on the windows, doors, walls, and pipes. This accumulation of water droplets occurs when the air inside your home is warmer than the outside air. So, to help keep the humidity low, we suggest you use a dehumidifier and insulate cracks where you can.
